More Information:
  • How does the bike decorating work?

Artists, bike lovers, and everybody in-between are invited to decorate their bikes in any way possible to participate. Bikes can be simple or complex, and the only requirement is that they are human-powered. How you transform your bike is up to your imagination, skills, and resources. Using recycled materials is encouraged and how you build your bike (tape, welding, glue, wire, glitter, paint, etc.) is entirely up to you.

You can either decorate your bike before or take advantage of our free decoration stations at the event. We will have all the materials you need as well as volunteer artists to assist you with the transformation of your bike.

Note that most decorations are temporary and non-destructive so you don't need to worry about hurting your awesome bike :)

  • What is the parade route?

The public is encouraged to join this parade with their decorated bikes, and if you’re not riding in the parade, please come out to enjoy the show from anywhere along the route.

We will leave from the Drake Library at 11:00 am, head down Park Street, turn right on 3rd Avenue, head up Broad St., right on 5th Ave, and finish back at the Central Park Bandstand for free food and live music.

  • How much does it cost?

This event is 100% free. This means you can decorate your bikes using our materials and volunteer support, eat delicious food, and be entertained by the whimsical parade and live music without spending a dime.

  • Need a free bike?

We made Bikes to Art 100% free to try and make it is assessable to everyone in the community. We understand that sometimes life can throw you a couple of curveballs and buying a bike for your child isn't possible. You don't need to have a bike to participate in Bikes to Art, but it does make it more fun.

To help make sure your child can enjoy all the fun, Professor Susan Villarreal and Ryan McGuire will be donating five new bikes to Grinnell kids, 12 and under, that are bike-less. If you have a child that wants to participate in Bikes to Art and doesn't have a bike, please complete this brief request form: FREE BIKE REQUEST FORM. We can't promise bikes to everyone that submits a request, but we will do our best to accommodate the ones with the most significant need.

  • Who created "Bikes to Art"?

Melissa Berman and Ryan McGuire are the creators and driving force behind "Bikes to Art." These two art-loving Grinnellian's are passionate about building community through art and are excited to be able to offer a creative and interactive event the entire city can enjoy for free.

Bikes to Art 2017 wouldn't have been such a successful event without the support of The Drake Community Library, volunteers, and our sponsors: Beckman Gallery, Bells Design, Bikes to You, Duck Tape, Grinnell Herald-Register, Grinnell Hy-Vee, Jessica Greenwell Photography, KGRN, McNally’s Foods, Purple Cucumber, Sam Berman & Sons, The Edge Hair Studios, Total Choice, and Vonda's Flowers & Gifts.

  • How can I support the event?

There are three ways you can help:

1.) Attend the event and decorate your bike.
    2.) Become a volunteer
3.) Become a business sponsor. Our sponsorships are $200, and this includes a new bike for you to decorate. These sponsorships help cover the cost of decorating materials, food, entertainment, prizes, and printing costs.

Last year was a blast. It rained a little, but we still had over 100 in attendance. Fingers crossed the sun is shining May 19!

Special thanks to our supporters!
